Some of the more avid followers among you, may have noticed that last week, the lucky staff of both Port Street Beer House and our older, yet less grown up ‘sister bar’, Common, went on a bit of a staff jaunt to Thornbridge Brewery. Yes not only do we close our doors to such wonderfully loyal patrons on a Monday, but sometimes take it upon ourselves to do something thoroughly enjoyable in the name of staff bonding instead! The start of Port Street Beer House’s American Beer Festival starting Mon 27th June, until the beer runs out, is clearly an ideal time to review Torpedo, an IPA from one of America’s most respected craft beer pioneers Sierra Nevada. On the second day of this wonderful festival, our favourite craft beer venue is buzzing with talk, tastings and trialling of an array of beers that would put any respectable beer sampling adventure at DEFCON 1. To be brutally honest, no-one really knows. There are all sorts of articles and postings on the internet where people claim to know the definition of what a craft brewer is. It’s easy enough to define what an American Craft Brewer is, because they have an association and a definition: Small, Independent and Traditional. But for them small is less than 6 million barrels of beer a year. That’s a whopping 1.7 billion pints. Not sound so whopping? Here’s a bit of maths; in the UK each day 28 million pints of beer are consumed, which equates to 1.02 billion pints a year. And by beer, that’s all beer including lager and even stuff like Tennents Super and Special Brew. (more…)
